About This Spot

Stepping into Medaka feels like slipping into a hidden rhythm within the ever-bustling heart of Shinjuku’s Kabukicho. The entrance might pass unnoticed by many, but once inside, you’re greeted by the hum of lively chatter and the clinking of glasses, spreading across multiple floors that encourage a sense of discovery as you find your place among the crowd. Here, the pace is unabashedly energetic, a bit raw, and filled with the unmistakable charm of a local favorite where different groups mingle, laugh loudly, and unwind with ease.

It’s the kind of izakaya that embraces its spirited personality — a lengthened evening of conviviality where the air carries the mingled scents of grilled chicken skin, fresh sashimi, and the faint sweetness of a cheese honey pizza sharing the table with a cold, frothy draft beer. Medaka invites you to sink into the casual warmth of its atmosphere, where the usual Tokyo polish is set aside for a more unfiltered experience. You might find yourself amidst lively groups celebrating milestones, friends sounding off over vibrant plates of takoyaki and soba, or newcomers leaning in to catch snippets of all the noise and laughter.

Smoking is part of this place’s honest character, a reminder of izakaya culture’s old-school roots, which means the air carries a smoky haze that some find nostalgic and others might notice more keenly. This aspect shapes the mood significantly — making Medaka less about quiet reflection and more about embracing the spirited, sometimes rowdy energy that fills its multiple floors.

Service moves with brisk efficiency, almost matching the rhythm of the bustling kitchen and bar. Though the food might not steal the spotlight on its own, it complements the atmosphere beautifully: approachable, varied, and designed for sharing, just like the conversations that float up through the stairwells. Whether you’re drawn by the draw of endless drinks or the playful variety of small plates, Medaka is a space where the joy comes as much from the company and the buzz as from the bites themselves.

At its core, Medaka is a local stage for convivial moments, imperfectly perfect, where the evening unfolds through laughter, smoky air, and the simple pleasure of gathering in a place that feels achingly real and unmistakably alive.

Good place to have a few drinks with bigger groups. Please know smoking is allowed inside so if you don’t want to be exposed to other people smoking perhaps not the best place to go - to be fair, this Izakaya has multiple levels and we could have unknowingly ended up at the smokers level. Service is quick and efficient, food was ok but nothing to write home about. Plenty of variety though.

We went for the all you can eat/drink, very fast service, a lot of space to sit. Very good

Unassuming entrance. Great place to get cheap drinks in a smoky bar with some company. Not so much for a solo traveller.

I’m an unassuming location in Shinjuku, this is one of the few places you can still smoke indoors. Food is surprisingly good and overall cheap. Ordering from the tablet is quick and easy and food gets dropped off fast. Very loud and rowdy for the younger crowd; good to get cheap drinks and talk loud. The girl across from me laughed like a banshee.

all-you-can-eat and drink for 2.5 hours at ¥3,980. they have 4 floors, which is insane. we went there on a saturday, and even though it was crowded, the service was incredibly fast for both food and drinks. the only downside (or maybe upside for some) is that indoor smoking is allowed ????. even though I'm not a huge fan of Kabukicho, I think for the price, it's definitely worth it. they even have sashimi!
